Is iPhone Air Dead? Will There Ever Be a 2nd Gen?

While the most discussed iPhone in the 2025 lineup impressed with a unique design and an innovative super-thin body, Apple might consider canceling the Air model.

According to multiple reports, Apple has delayed the iPhone Air 2, the next generation of its super-slim smartphone that was supposed to launch in September 2026 alongside the iPhone 18 lineup and the long-rumored iPhone Fold.

Unfortunately, iPhone Air didn’t Take Off

iPhone Air launched in September, and Apple positioned it as a super-thin, futuristic device with a fresh new design. But its $999 price tag, paired with compromises like a smaller battery, a single rear camera, and a single speaker, quickly dampened excitement. At just $100 less than the iPhone 17 Pro, customers saw little reason to choose “thinness” over performance and versatility.

Reports show weak sales, production was cut back, and suppliers Foxconn and Luxshare have already halted or scaled down production to near-zero by the end of this month(November 2025).

The iPhone Air wasn’t officially canceled – but it’s clear the demand wasn’t there.

Potential 2nd Generation

Inside Apple, work had already begun on the iPhone Air 2. According to leaks, the next gen was planned to have a lighter chassis, larger battery, and even vapor chamber cooling from the Pro lineup. Some leaks even hinted at a dual-camera setup, which could be a huge upgrade.

But the good news ends here – according to The Information, Apple “removed the iPhone Air 2 from its schedule without providing a new release date,” which is rare, if not unprecedented for the company.

Engineers and supply chain partners have been told to pause. This doesn’t sound like a permanent cancellation, but more like Apple pressing the brakes while it rethinks its direction.

Why It Might Return… and When

Apple has been trying for years to find a successful fourth iPhone model to fit between the standard & Pro iPhone models.

The iPhone mini failed. The iPhone Plus didn’t stick. And now, the iPhone Air struggles to justify its existence.

If a potential redesign works out, some insiders say the next-generation iPhone Air could arrive in 2027.

A Shift in Apple’s Strategy?

Some analysts see this delay as part of a bigger shake-up in Apple’s iPhone lineup.
For the fall of 2026, we’re now expecting just three models:

  • iPhone 18 Pro
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max
  • iPhone Fold

While the standard iPhone 18 and 18e are expected in spring 2027, together with a possible iPhone Air 2.

Other sources are sceptical of such a change in product announcements, so we will see if this comes true, but one thing is for sure – Apple is looking for a change, and iPhone Air wasn’t the solution the company is searching for.

So… Was iPhone Air a Failure?

It depends on how you look at it. The iPhone Air showed design brilliance, but in reality, people care more about battery life and camera power than about shaving off a millimeter.

iPhone Air is surely dead in its current structure, but Apple will surely try a new formula, which might include a super slim design.

Time will tell – so follow TrendsPlace to learn everything about the future new iPhone models.
