Possible weaknesses: If the card or key fob is lost or stolen, someone else could potentially unlock the door. However, unlike physical keys, you can instantly deactivate the lost card/key fob through the lock’s app.

5. Smartphone App Unlock

Smart locks can also be controlled through a smartphone app using Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Ultra Wideband (UWB).

Security level: High when proper authentication is used.

Possible weaknesses: Security depends partly on the smartphone itself. If the phone is compromised or unlocked by someone else, it may allow access to the lock. This is why you’d better set up biometric authentication like on a banking app.

Potential Weak Points of Smart Locks

While smart locks are generally safe, users should still consider several potential risks.

Battery dependency
Most smart locks are battery-powered. If the battery dies, the lock may stop working electronically. However, most models provide low-battery warnings and emergency power contacts.

Poor installation
Even the most advanced lock can be vulnerable if the door frame, hinges, or strike plate are weak. Physical door security remains extremely important.

Cheap or unknown brands
Low-cost smart locks may lack strong encryption or proper security testing. Choosing reputable manufacturers significantly reduces this risk. This is not a thing you want to make a compromise with.

Weak passwords or shared access
If the app account uses a weak password or too many people have access codes, security can be compromised.

Are Smart Locks Safer Than Traditional Locks?

In many cases, smart locks can actually be more secure than traditional keys. Physical keys can be lost, copied, or stolen without the owner knowing. Smart locks, on the other hand, can log access activity, revoke permissions instantly, and support multiple authentication methods.

However, the best security usually comes from combining technologies – for example, using fingerprint authentication together with smartphone verification(you should make sure the provider supports such functions).

Should You Get a Smart Lock?

Smart locks are generally secure enough for everyday home use, especially when purchased from reputable brands and installed correctly.

But there are things to consider for your specific needs. For example, if you are a big family with kids, and you are worrying about a child losing his key card or telling somebody the code, a fingerprint or palm recognition sensor might be a better solution.
