Apple’s Watch Series 11 has officially arrived at the highly anticipated September Apple Event, bringing meaningful improvements over the previous generation – Series 10.
At first glance, both models look very similar, but Apple has made refinements in performance, design options, and usability that might convince you to upgrade. Should you go with Series 10, Series 11, or Ultra 3? Let’s find out!
Design & Materials
Both Series 11 and Series 10 come in 42mm and 46mm sizes with aluminum and titanium finishes. The only difference is the new color options in Series 11. You can now get Rose Gold Aluminum, Jet Black, Silver, and Space Gray.
Titanium options remain as these in Series 10 – Natural, Gold, and Slate. The body dimensions are unchanged, while Apple cut 2 grams off the weight of the 46mm version compared to Series 10, making it just slightly lighter(but it’s actually unnoticeable).
One of the biggest upgrades is the new Ceramic Shield 2 included in the Series 11, which Apple claims is twice as scratch-resistant as the first-gen used in Series 10.
Display & Brightness
Both generations feature an Always-On LTPO3 Retina OLED display with up to 2000 nits brightness and as low as 1 nit for nighttime use. No upgrades in brightness this year – it’s the same 2,000 nits as last year’s models. If you want a brighter display, you should consider Ultra 3 with its 3,000 nits of brightness.
Performance & Features
Both Series 10 and Series 11 share the same S10 dual-core processor, W3 wireless chip, and 2-Gen Ultra Wideband chip. That means you’re not getting more raw speed, but Series 11 focuses on software-driven features:
- New Wrist Flick gesture: lets you navigate hands-free with a simple wrist motion, which is an exclusive new feature to Series 11.
- On-device Siri with health data access: same across both, but now a bit faster on Series 11 thanks to system optimizations.
Finally, the Series 11 will get 5G connectivity – a long-awaited feature by Apple fans. Unfortunately, the satellite connectivity wasn’t announced, so this really useful feature is available only on Ultra 3.
Health & Safety
Series 11 doesn’t reinvent health tracking but adds Hypertension Notifications – Series 11’s new feature, but Series 10 will also get an upgrade.
Battery Life
Series 11 finally extends beyond Series 10’s limitations, getting battery life for up to 24 hours (vs. 18 hours on Series 10).
While in low power mode, it can reach 38 hours (vs. 36 hours on Series 10).
There aren’t any changes to charging time – it’s the same on both Series 10 and Series 11.
Price & Availability
- Apple Watch Series 11 GPS: from $399
- Apple Watch Series 11 GPS + Cellular: from $499
That’s the same entry price as the Series 10, making Series 11 essentially a feature-bump upgrade at no extra cost.
Should You Go With Apple Watch Series 11 or Stay with Series 10?
If you are an owner of a Series 10 Apple smartwatch, I wouldn’t advise you to upgrade – there aren’t that many big upgrades, excluding 5G connectivity and battery life improvements. We might say the new generation is Series 10+ or Series 10 5G, with some small improvements and optimizations without meaningful upgrades like design changes, better display, or better performance.
Should You Go With Apple Watch Ultra 3 Instead?
If you’re the type who pushes your Apple Watch to its limits – or just wants the most rugged, longest-lasting model – the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the better choice. Here’s why:
- Brighter display: 3000 nits vs. 2000 nits.
- Bigger titanium case available: 49mm with tougher sapphire crystal.
- Better battery: Up to 42 hours standard and 72 hours in Low Power Mode.
- Extreme durability: 100m water resistance, scuba diving up to 40m.
- Extra safety: Siren and Emergency SOS via satellite – features not available on Series 11.
- Better GPS: Precision dual-frequency GPS for adventurers and athletes.
That said, the Ultra 3 starts at $799, nearly double the Series 11’s price. If you just want a stylish, health-focused smartwatch with daily reliability, Series 11 is more than enough. But if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, diver, or marathon runner who values endurance and toughness above all, the Ultra 3 is definitely worth every dollar.
